MEET YOUR DOULA

Brenna Huffman

My story starts in 2018 when I volunteered in the NICU. I have always loved babies but my heart was really drawn to the mothers who were facing a difficult start to their motherhood journey. After realizing how much I wanted to help I became a Nanny for families with infants, each family I helped was in a different situation with their infants. Yet again my heart was always so happy to serve the mothers in what different ways they needed but I felt called to serve mothers in a deeper way. When searching for how I could do this I found Doulas. I was instantly drawn to this career knowing I could help mothers at such an important time in their life. I became a fully trained Postpartum doula 3 months later and fully trained Birth Doula1 year later. I have loved it ever since. Helping mothers gain confidence with their newborn, decipher what the best choices were for their family in all different aspects including birthing, feeding, sleeping and baby product selection. I would love to help you as well. Warmly welcoming you and your baby into this journey with comforting and knowledgeable support.

For black maternal health week and my journey to become a certified birth doula, I am reading this book. I refuse to be a doula who doesn’t acknowledge that black women are 2-3x more likely to die during childbirth than their white peers. I will loudly advocate for all of my clients however there is a special stand that needs to be taken for black mothers in particular!

Moms need an uplifting village and I’m just one part to that as the postpartum doula! It’s very hard for new moms to hear everything that went wrong with your pregnancy birth and postpartum. It can cause her anxiety about her own journey to motherhood. Instead tell your expecting or new mom friend how excited and happy you are for them. Let them know that you’re willing to support their physical needs with food or by doing baby laundry.

Hormones change drastically after birth as well casing about 1 in 7 women to experience postpartum depression.
